Asheville is home to more than 83,000 residents, according to the 2010 U.S. Census, and is the county seat of Buncombe County. Asheville is the central hub of the four-county Asheville metro area, which is home to more than 400,000 residents. In 2011, "Good Morning America" cited the city as one of the "10 Most Beautiful Places in America," and Asheville also has earned plaudits from publications as varied as Self (which cited Asheville as America's "Happiest City"), Modern Maturity (which named it one of "The 50 Most Alive Places to Be") and Rolling Stone (which proclaimed it "America's New Freak Capital," citing its active New Age community).
Asheville is also notable for its many examples of Art Deco architecture in the downtown district. This is attributable to the substantial growth of Asheville in the 1910s and 1920s, which saw the city take out numerous bonds for construction. When the Great Depression then hit, the city's bonded debt was so large ($56 million, the highest per capita debt of any city in the nation at the time and equivalent to more than $700 million today) that it curtailed new development for a half-century while those debts were paid, and structures built during the earlier boom period - which might otherwise have been renovated or razed for new development - remained unaltered. |
